The silicone case for iPhone 12 is the only MagSafe accessory currently widely available, along with the transparent Clear Case. Later, there will also be leather cases for the iPhone 12 and there is a magnetic leather wallet (Leather card holder, 65 euros), which, however, has such a delivery time that you can hope that you will have it at home before Sinterklaas. In addition, there are some complaints about it. The standard silicone case from Apple will therefore be the first choice for many people if you are looking for protection for your iPhone. But not everything is great. For example, this silicone case has shot up in price from € 39 (with the iPhone 6/7/8) to € 45 (recent years) and now to € 55. At first glance, the new silicone case looks exactly like previous years this year, with an opening for the camera and an inner lining of microfibre. Still, there are two notable changes.
First, there is a light colored ring on the inside, meant for MagSafe. You don’t see any of that on the outside.

With other case manufacturers, the ring is less beautifully applied. For example, the Otterbox case has a kind of white sticker inside, in which the magnets are incorporated. This is one of the few new cases to have official MagSafe support.
At Apple , everything is neatly arranged seamlessly. If you put your iPhone in the case, you will see an animation in the color of the case. A nice detail, but nothing more. As you can see in one of the photos above, you can also hang your iPhone on the wall in the kitchen. You must have a magnetic strip. With the case, it sticks fairly well, although we recommend sticking with it. Without a case, it won’t stick as well and you run the risk of damage if the iPhone falls off. The case therefore serves a bit as a ‘magnet amplifier’.
Of the eight colors that Apple has in the range, the citrus pink, kumquat and plum purple appeal to us the least, but that is of course personal. On the other hand, we find the blue color very beautiful. Especially the inside has a beautiful color tone (although of course you never see that). We can also recommend cyprus green. All these cases can be viewed on a display in the Apple Store , so you can choose the combination that best suits your iPhone.
The second change is that the case is now closed at the bottom. This was not yet the case with the silicone case for iPhone 11 . Many people have responded enthusiastically to this change. It means that the bottom of your iPhone is better protected. It does mean that plugging in the Lightning cable requires a little more attention. The opening for the Lightning port is now quite small; the thickening of the Lightning cable just fits in. At the bottom you will also find holes for the speaker.
We also found it striking that the volume buttons on the blue case are black. With the other colors, they are slightly darker than the rest of the case. Since the dark blue case is already very dark in itself, that is not disturbing. Keep in mind that the dark colors can quickly become dusty, especially if you wear fluffy clothes or have pockets that leave a lot of dust.
Silicone cover in use
The earlier version of MagSafe (you know, the one for MacBooks) prevented your device from being thrown the moment someone tripped over the cable. This is not the case with the MagSafe charger. The charger is so securely attached to the iPhone that it cannot just come loose. In fact, you can throw the iPhone around on the charger as if it were a lasso. If you don’t do that too wildly, the iPhone won’t shoot off.
The magnet in the MagSafe Charger is therefore much stronger than the one in the case. That actually makes sense. The cover stays on the iPhone by itself and cannot slide. There are even those who have theorized that the magnet system was needed to keep the case from falling off, because the iPhone now has straight edges. That could be, but it seems a bit far-fetched to us.
The cover is easy to place, but taking it off takes a little more effort. Personally, I am always afraid that I will call emergency services, when I get around my iPhone and press buttons unnoticed. Since I have set taps on the back , I sometimes accidentally take a screenshot when removing the case. Fortunately, you don’t really have to remove the case after use, so we won’t be blaming Apple for this problem.
Conclusion – MagSafe silicone case for iPhone 12
Many people will buy this silicone case because it is one of the few that is MagSafe compliant and is also still in stock. Others will rather wait for Apple’s leather sleeve, which is expected to arrive during November. In both cases, you already know what to expect, because Apple has been making these covers for years. The advice still remains: prefer to buy a dark color, because it is less noticeable when it gets dirty (as you can see, we ignored that advice with the white cover). Handy is that this cover is washable.
This is a great case if you are looking for a solution quickly, or are used to always buying a standard Apple case. Keep in mind that you have to look for a new one after a year, because it wears out quite quickly. And then a price of 55 euros is actually a bit on the high side.
